Smith smashes records, leads Ridgefield at LL swim meet

For Kieran Smith, his records are meant to be broken. By him.

Smith gave a performance to savor Wednesday, winning two individual events in eye-catching times to help the Ridgefield High boys swim team place fourth at the Class LL state championship meet at Wesleyan University in Middletown.

The Tigers had 514 points to finish behind Greenwich (833 points), Fairfield Prep (643.5) and Staples (593) in the 22-team field.

Smith, a senior who will swim at the University of Florida, won the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle. His time of 1:35.18 in the 200 freestyle demolished the previous Class LL (1:38.33) and state (1:37.28) records that Smith had set last season.

Smith was just as impressive in the 500 freestyle. He had a time of 4:21.37 to crush the Class LL (4:25.56) and state (4:24.69) marks he established last year.

Smith's teammate, freshman Connor Hunt, was second in both events. Hunt clocked 4:37.96 in the 500 freestyle, finishing more than 16 seconds behind Smith but four-plus seconds ahead of third-place finisher Nicolas Ortega of Staples (4:42.02). Hunt was also the runner-up (by nearly eight seconds) to Smith in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:43.09.

Ridgefield senior AJ Bornstein added two more top-three finishes. Bornstein, who will swim at Michigan, was second in the 200 individual in a school-record time of 1:52.77, losing to Greenwich's Stephan Todorovic (1:52.71) by only .06. Later in the meet, Bornstein finished third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.88.

Junior Will Bryant also had a top-three finish for the Tigers, placing third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.83.

Sophomore Luke Hruska contributed a pair of top-eight finishes. Hruska was seventh in the 100 backstroke (54.34) and eighth in the 100 butterfly (53.68).

The Tigers got second-place finishes from the 200 medley relay team of Smith, Bornstein, Hruska, and Bryant (1:33.78) and the 200 freestyle relay team of Hruska, Bryant, Hunt, and Smith (1:26.54).

Hunt, Andrew Dong, Trey O'Malley, and Bornstein combined to finish fourth inn the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:17.18.

Ridgefield received additional points from Dong (19th, 2:04.46) in the 200 IM; Andrew Yu (17th, 23.06) and Gavin Egerton (20th, 23.34) in the 50 freestyle; O'Malley (12th, 53.98) and Yu (24th, 55.27) in the 100 butterfly; Bryant (ninth, 48.58), Dong (11th, 50.55) and Egerton (12th, 50.56) in the 100 freestyle; Matthew Johnston (19th, 57.71) in the 100 backstroke; and O'Malley (20th, 1:04.04) in the 100 breaststroke.

Notes: The top-24 finishers in each event scored points.

Smith's times in the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle were both Automatic All-American times.

Recording All-American Consideration times were Bornstein in the 200 breaststroke and Smith, Bornstein, Hruska, and Bryant in the 200 medley relay.

Junior Caitlin Inall had contributed 23 points for Ridgefield by finishing sixth in the Class LL diving championship, which took place last Tuesday. Inall broke her own school record with 421.10 points.
