Ridgefield third at State Open boys swimming
Led by victories in three events, the Ridgefield High boys swim team ended its season with a third-place finish at the State Open meet last Thursday at Yale University’s Kiphuth Pool in New Haven.
The Tigers had 378.5 points to finish behind first-place Greenwich (600) and runner-up New Canaan (480.5). Pomperaug was fourth with 297 points and Fairfield Prep fifth with 293.5 points.
Greenwich's title was its seventh straight and 35th overall.
Sophomore Connor Hunt and senior Will Bryant combined to win three individual races for Ridgefield. Hunt triumphed in the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle, and Bryant prevailed in the 50-yard freestyle. By placing first, Hunt and Bryant ended the postseason unbeaten in those events.
In the 200 freestyle, Hunt had a time of 1:41.40 to edge Glastonbury's McAllistar Milne (1:41.55) and Greenwich's Charles Clark (1:41.92). Hunt later added a victory in the 500 freestyle with his time of 4:32.24. Milne was second in 4:33.91.
Bryant won the 50 freestyle in 21.25 seconds, breaking his own school record of 21.31, which he had set at the FCIAC championships. John Marcolina of Fitch was second in 21.34 seconds.
Adding a top-three finish for Ridgefield was junior Andrew Yu, who placed third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 52.59.
Yu swam the leadoff (backstroke) leg on Ridgefield's 200 medley relay, which finished third in 1:36.61. Luke Hruska (breaststroke), Linney O'Malley (butterfly), and Bryant (freestyle) also swam legs for the Tigers.
Hunt, Ethan Murray, Hruska, and Bryant teamed to place fifth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:28.01), and Murray, Yu, Gavin Egerton, and Hunt were sixth in the 400 freestyle relay (3:14.17).
Also contributing points for Ridgefield were Murray (10th, 1:44.23) in the 200 freestyle; Hruska (11th, 1:57.47) in the 200 individual medley; Caitlin Inall (13th, 411..55 points) in the diving competition; Hruska (15th, 53.04) and O'Malley (16th, 53.08) in the 100 butterfly; Yu (10th, 48.28) and Egerton (tied for 23rd, 49.52) in the 100 freestyle; Matthew Johnston (12th, 54.31) in the 100 butterfly; and Bryant (13th, 59.72) in the 100 breaststroke.
