Ridgefield rallies for 19-12 victory over Danbury
Scoring two fourth-quarter touchdowns, the Ridgefield High football team rallied to end its season with a 19-12 win over host Danbury on Wednesday night.
The victory, which came in the teams' annual FCIAC Thanksgiving Rivalry game, wasn't assured until Ridgefield knocked down a Danbury pass in the end zone on a fourth-and-three play from the Tigers' four-yard line with 49 seconds remaining.
Ridgefield finished the season with a two-game winning streak and a 6-4 record.
Trailing 12-7, the Tigers went ahead on Owen Matthews' 30-yard touchdown pass to Evan Wein with 9:32 left in the fourth quarter. Ridgefield was unable to convert a two-point conversion pass, leaving the visitors with a 13-12 lead.
Following a fumble recovery inside the Danbury 15-yard line, Ridgefield got a three-yard touchdown run from Dan Moroney. Another two-point try failed, and the Tigers led 19-12 with under four minutes to play.
Ridgefield opened the scoring on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Matthews to Gianni Gorham in the first quarter. Sebastian Gasparo's extra point put the Tigers ahead, 7-0.
Danbury got a 64-yard touchdown pass from Malachi Hopkins to RJ Hopkins with 3:34 left in the second quarter. The Hatters went stopped on a two-point conversion run, and Ridgefield went into halftime with a 7-6 lead.
Malik Thomas scored on a 98-yard run early in the third quarter as Danbury went in front, 12-7. The Hatters again went for two points but failed to convert on another run play.
Notes: Danbury ended its season with a 4-6 record.
Ridgefield's g0-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter came after Owen Gaydos intercepted a Danbury pass.
