Hamden tops Ridgefield in boys hoop state tourney

The Ridgefield High boys basketball team watched its season come to a close with an 81-69 loss to Hamden in a Division I state tournament second-round game Friday evening in Hamden.

The 11th-seeded Tigers, who had received a first-round bye, finished with a 16-6 record.

Sixth-seed Hamden (22-3) will now play third-seed Bassick in the quarterfinals on Monday.

After trailing 40-29 at halftime, Ridgefield was down by just three points, 55-52, at the end of the third quarter. The Tigers were still within five points with just over three minutes left, but Hamden pulled away in the closing minutes.

Junior guard James St. Pierre hit five three-pointers and led Ridgefield with 25 points.

In his final high school game, senior forward Brenden McNamara added 15 points for the Tigers.

Junior point guard Luke McGarrity contributed 11 points, and senior guard Alex Price had nine points.

Sophomore Chris Knachel (four points) and juniors Jackson Mitchell (three points) and Nick Hall (two points) also scored for the Tigers.

Jaylen Ricks had a game-high 27 points for Hamden. Victor Rosario added 18 points and Ronnie Ellis had 17 points.
