Boys hockey: Tigers pull away to rout ND-Fairfield, 7-1
With Nick Cullinan and Will Forrest each scoring two goals, the Ridgefield High boys hockey team routed Notre Dame-Fairfield, 7-1, on Wednesday night at the Winter Garden.
It was the first home game of the season for the Tigers, who are now 3-0 this season.
The start of the game wasn't suggestive of the blowout to follow. Shortly after Forrest gave Ridgefield a 1-0 lead on an assist from Cullinan, Notre Dame evened the score with a goal of its own.
Cullinan then put the Tigers ahead for good when he scored on an assist from Forrest with two minutes left in the opening period. Henry Garlick quickly followed with another goal, assisted by Kees van Wees, as Ridgefield increased its lead to 3-1 at the end of the first 15 minutes.
The Tigers began the second period by killing off three Notre Dame power plays, including two five-on-three advantages.
Goals from Matt Walker and Dan Parson then boosted Ridgefield's advantage to 5-1 through two periods.
Forrest contributed the first goal of the final period before Cullinan scored on an assist from Logan Chang to finish off Ridgefield's 7-1 victory.
Notes: Forrest had two assists for the Tigers. Patrick Rigby, Owen Luft, Brady McSpedon, Parson, Cullinan, Walker, Chang, and van Wees added one assist apiece.
Sean Gordon got the win in goal for Ridgefield.
With wins over Fairfield Prep (first), Xavier (fifth), and Notre Dame-Fairfield (10th), the Tigers have defeated three other teams ranked among the state's pre-season top 10. Ridgefield began the year ranked second in the state poll.
