Strong summer for Hunt, RAC swimmers
It’s been a busy and productive summer for the Ridgefield Aquatic Club swim team.
After finishing third in the combined standings at the state’s Senior Championship meet (July 18-21) at Wesleyan University in Middletown, RAC’s younger swimmers placed in the top-five of several divisions at the state’s Age Group Championship (July 25-28) in Cheshire.
And then there was Connor Hunt. Representing RAC at the Speedo Junior Nationals (Aug. 6-10) at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., Hunt, achieved an Olympic trials cut time.
Hunt, a rising junior at Ridgefield High School, finished fifth in the men’s 800-meter freestyle in a time of 8:11.52, just under the Olympic trials cut of 8:12.00.
Hunt competed in several other events at junior nationals, placing 15th in the 1500 freestyle (15:48.08), 18th in the 400 individual medley (4:28.93), and 21st in the 400 freestyle (3:59.65).
At the Senior Championships, RAC received first-place finishes from Hannah Seward in the women’s 100-meter butterfly (1:01.78), James Huang in the men’s 200-meter backstroke (2:06.34) and 200-meter butterfly (2:01.53), and Hunt in the men’s 400-meter individual medley (4:33.35).
Seward added a sixth-place finish in the 50 freestyle (27.02), a seventh-place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:25.33), and an eighth-place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:27.45).
Also competing in championship heats for the RAC girls team and placing in the top eight were Anna Turner (seventh, 2:09.47) in the girls 200 freestyle; Rylie Giles in the girls 400 freestyle (seventh, 4:31.07), 800 freestyle (seventh, 9:17.75), and 1500 freestyle (fourth, 17:43.83);

In addition to his two first-place finishes, Huang was second in the men’s 100 butterfly (55.14) and fifth in the 100 backstroke (59.14).
Shayne Simmons finished third in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.24), and Hunt placed seventh in the 200 freestyle (1:55.78).
RAC was second in the men’s 200 freestyle relay and the 400 medley relay, fourth in the 400 freestyle relay and the 800 freestyle relay, and eighth in the 200 medley relay.
At the Age Group meet, RAC got top-five finishes from its 10-under girls team (fifth, 233 points), its 11/12 girls team (fourth, 304 points), and its 13/14 boys team (fourth, 298 points).
Finishing among the top-20 individual point scorers in their respective age groups for RAC were: Shaun Li (ninth, boys 11/12); Lizzie Nguyen (10th, girls 10-under); Lily Archibald (11th, girls 11/12); Keira Giles (20th, girls 11/12); Derek Yin (12th, boys 11/12); Riley Riebling (14th, girls 13/14); Ashley Piacentino (19th, girls 13/14); Nate Oppenheim (16th, boys 13/14), and Max Wolfenden (17th, boys 13/14).
