New York Giants honor Ridgefield’s Kevin Callahan as Coach of the Week
Following a bye this week, the unbeaten Ridgefield football team travels to New Jersey to play Chatham in an out-of-state game next Saturday.
For Ridgefield head coach Kevin Callahan, it will be the second visit to the Garden State in three weekends.
The first appearance was electronic.
Last Friday, the New York Giants and Gatorade announced that Callahan was their choice for the Lou Rettino High School Coach of the Week award for Week 3 of the 2019 season. Callahan was chosen after guiding Ridgefield to a 17-14 upset win over New Canaan (the state’s third-ranked team at the time) on Sept. 20 at Tiger Hollow.
Along with the Week 1 and Week 2 winners, Callahan had his name projected on the MetLife Stadium scoreboard during Sunday’s game between the Giants and the Washington Redskins in East Rutherford, N.J. An in-game announcement was also part of the award presentation.
“I wasn’t able to make the game, but people sent me pictures of the scoreboard,” said Callahan, a lifelong Giants fan. “It’s definitely a nice honor.”
In recognition of Callahan’s selection, the Giants Foundation and Gatorade will donate $2,000 to the Ridgefield football program. Callahan also receives a certificate of recognition signed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Giants head coach Pat Shurmur.
In addition, Callahan and the other weekly winners are invited to a dinner hosted by the Giants at MetLife Stadium next spring. Callahan and his coaching staff and players are also invited to a Giants preseason game in 2020.
“It’s great for the program,” Callahan said. “We’re honored that the Giants and Gatorade gave us the recognition.”
Ridgefield has been one of the surprise teams in the state this season. The Tigers improved to 3-0 with their 7-0 win over Staples last Saturday and are ranked eighth in the latest GameTimeCT Top 10 poll.
“Our players were optimistic going into the season, and after beating New Canaan they feel confident that they can play with the best teams,” Callahan said. “We have built some positive momentum.”
