Back in action: RHS teams start fall season next week
One week from today.
Next Friday (Sept. 7), three of the eight Ridgefield High fall sports teams will start their seasons.
The trio includes the RHS football team, which travels to Darien for a night game against the three-time defending Class LL state champs.
Playing their season openers at home next Friday are the RHS field hockey and girls volleyball squads.
Two more teams (boys and girls soccer) begin the season next Saturday, with the boys and girls cross country teams (Sept. 11) and the girls swim team (Sept. 14) getting underway next week.
For the second straight year, Ridgefield opens the season against conference and state power Darien, playing the Blue Wave next Friday (Sept. 7) in Darien.
The Tigers have their first of five home games the following Friday (Sept. 14) against Stamford. The home schedule also includes Ridgefield’s homecoming game against Brien McMahon on Oct. 26.
Nine of the Tigers’ 10 games are evening kickoffs; the one exception is a Saturday afternoon road contest at arch-rival Wilton — a team that Ridgefield hasn’t lost to since 1993.
Sept. 7: At Darien, 7 p.m.
Sept. 14: Home vs. Stamford, 7 p.m.
Sept. 21: At Bridgeport Central, 7 p.m.
Sept. 28: Home vs. Staples, 7 p.m.
Oct. 5: Home vs. St. Joseph, 7 p.m.

Nov. 2: Home vs. Greenwich, 7 p.m.
Nov. 9: At Fairfield Warde, 6 p.m.
Nov. 21: At Danbury, 6 p.m.
For the first time in program history, Ridgefield enters the season as a reigning state champion. Following back-to-back losses to Glastonbury in the state finals in 2015 and 2016, the Tigers defeated conference rival Staples, 2-0, in the Class LL title game last fall.
With many top players returning, Ridgefield looks to be among the favorites for both FCIAC and state championships this season.
The Tigers begin their title quests next Saturday (Sept. 8) with a road game against Trinity Catholic in Stamford.

Sept. 11: At Stamford, 4 p.m.

Oct. 16: At Norwalk, 7 p.m.
Oct. 19: Home vs. Westhill, 4 p.m.
Oct. 22: Home vs. Warde, 7 p.m.
The Tigers went 12-3-1 during the regular season last year and earned the top seed going into the FCIAC playoffs. But a quarterfinal loss to Danbury and a subsequent 2-1 overtime setback to Norwalk in the Class LL state quarterfinals left Ridgefield sans silverware.
With more than 20 seniors having graduated, it will be up to a new crop of players to atone for last fall’s unfulfilling finish.
Ridgefield opens the 2018 season next Saturday (Sept. 8) at home against Trinity Catholic.
Sept. 8: Home vs. Trinity, 4 p.m.
Sept. 12: Home vs. Stamford, 7 p.m.
Sept. 14: At Trumbull, 4 p.m.

Oct. 18: Home vs. Norwalk, 7 p.m.
Oct. 20: At Westhill, noon
Oct. 23: At Fairfield Warde, 4 p.m.
The only RHS team with a new head coach this fall, Ridgefield starts its season next Friday (Sept. 7) against non-conference opponent New Fairfield at home.
The Tigers then play four of their next six games on the road, including a contest against defending FCIAC champ Wilton.
Sept. 7: Home vs. New Fairfield, 5:30 p.m.
Sept. 11: At Danbury, 4 p.m.
Sept. 13: Home vs. Stamford, 7 p.m.
Sept. 17: At Fairfield Warde, 4 p.m.
Sept. 22: At Wilton, 10 a.m.
Sept. 25: Home vs. Westhill, 7 p.m.
Sept. 27: At Norwalk, 6:30 p.m.
Oct. 1: Home vs. New Canaan, 6 p.m.

Oct. 16: Home vs. St. Joseph, 6 p.m.
Oct. 19: At Darien, 4 p.m.
Oct. 22: Home vs. Staples, 5:15 p.m.
A year removed from a first-ever FCIAC championship, Ridgefield did not have much a comedown in 2017.
The Tigers finished fourth at the conference meet before placing second in Class LL and fourth at the State Open.
With many of its top performers back, expect Ridgefield to once again be a postseason factor.

Sept. 20: At Darien, 3 p.m.
Sept. 26: At Greenwich, 4:30
Oct. 3: At Danbury, 4:30 p.m.
Oct. 5: Home vs. Westhill, 4 p.m.
Oct. 12: Home vs. Warde, 4 p.m.
Oct. 19: At Trumbull, 4 p.m.
Oct. 24: Home vs. McMahon, 4 p.m.
Notes: Ridgefield’s home meets take place at Barlow Mountain Elementary School.
The first of three places where the graduation loss of Caroline Curnal affects Ridgefield teams this school year comes on the volleyball court. After earning All-State honors in basketball and lacrosse as a junior, Curnal added All-State honors in volleyball last fall, establishing herself as arguably the best overall female athlete in RHS history.
With several other key players returning, the Tigers will hope to surprise those who expect a downturn this season.
Ridgefield gets its first chance to do that in next Friday’s opener against Pomperaug.
Sept. 7: Home vs. Pomperaug, 5:30 p.m.

Boys and girls cross country
Two teams, one schedule.
The Ridgefield High boys and girls cross country teams will each have five regular-season meets on the same days and at the same times and locations this fall.
Over a span of five regular-season meets, the RHS teams will face all 15 of their conference opponents.
