RIDGEFIELD \u2014 A 20-year-old Waterbury man was killed in a head-on collision on Route 7 early Thursday that left both drivers trapped in their vehicles. Police identified the driver who was killed as Jose Miguel Guillen-Hernandez. The crash occurred shortly after 4 a.m., according to Ridgefield Police Capt. Shawn Platt. \u201cThe two vehicles collided head-on and both operators needed to be extricated from their vehicles,\u201d Platt said. The driver of the other car, a 44-year-old Ridgefield woman, was transported to Danbury Hospital \u201cfor evaluation of their injuries,\u201d he said. The accident shut down a stretch of Route 7 for hours Thursday morning. First responders were dispatched shortly after 4 a.m. to Route 7 and Stonehenge Road for a reported motor vehicle accident with extrication needed, according to initial dispatch reports. A state DOT alert around 4:30 a.m. indicated it was a two-vehicle crash. Initial dispatch reports indicated fire crews extricated at least one person, calling the process \u201cextensive.\u201d In a brief statement on social media around 8 a.m., police said Route 7 was closed between Stonehenge and Haviland roads because of a two-vehicle crash. Police said traffic was being re-routed from Haviland Road to Route 35. At 9:45 a.m., police said Route 7 had reopened. Platt said the investigation into the fatal collision is ongoing.
