Mary Teresa (Halloran) Sponberg died peacefully at Wilton Meadows Health Care Center on Friday morning, August 10, 2012. She was 82. Mrs. Sponberg was the first of three children born to Timothy Martin and Rose Teresa Halloran; Irish immigrants who met and married in the United States. Mary was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 17, 1929. A second daughter, Ann, was born three years later. Ann died from pneumonia at the age of 18. Mary, who had been blind since birth, attended public schools in Brooklyn, NY. After graduating from Bushwick High School, she\u00a0 entered a Carmelite order to try her vocation. Two years later, Mary left religious life and went to work at the Industrial Home for the Blind in Brooklyn, NY, where she met her future husband, Conrad Sponberg.\u00a0 Mary was a devoted wife to Conrad for 45 years, until his death in 1998. The Sponbergs moved to Ridgefield in 1992. Mary lived at Ballard Green until moving to Prospect Ridge Congregate Housing in 2009. She had spent the last year at Wilton Meadows due to failed health. With the help of family and friends, Mary was active in town and in St. Mary's Parish. She attended mass regularly, spent time in the Adoration Chapel, participated in Bible study groups and made a Cursillo. In 2005 she earned a certificate of completion for the Education + Parish + Service program. Mary was an Associate of the Sisters of Notre Dame. She also made numerous trips with the Ahearn Pilgrimage Group to Ste. Anne de Beaupre, a 300 year old shrine in Quebec, Canada. Mary belonged to Founders Hall and the Widow and Widowers Club. Up until she entered Wilton Meadows, Mary and her friend Cathy went weekly to Stop & Shop followed by a visit to either Dunkin Donuts or Baskin Robbins. Mary availed herself of\u00a0 the wonderful\u00a0 services offered in Ridgefield. She relied upon and appreciated the HART bus, Meals on Wheels, R-U-Okay, the Western CT Area Agency on the Aging, the town Agent for the Disabled, and the staff members at Ballard Green and Prospect Ridge. Mary is survived by her brother, Timothy Halloran and sister-in-law, Laura, of Ridgefield, CT. A Mass of Chriistian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at 10:15 am in St. Mary Church, Ridgefield. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Ridgefield. The family will receive friends in the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah St., Ridgefield on Monday, August 13, 2012 from 5\u00a0 to 8PM.
