Salvatore Monti, Realtor, town leader

Salvatore Carmine Monti passed peacefully from this life the morning of August 11, 2015 after a gradual decline in health and a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.

Sal was born in Stamford on July 17, 1930, grew up in Darien, and spent most of his life in Ridgefield. He was proud to serve in the United States Marine Corps. Sal returned from his honorable service in Korea, obtained his business degree and began work as an accountant.

He soon met the love of his life, Hilda. The two were wed in 1955 and moved to Ridgefield. Sal and Hilda raised their four daughters in Ridgefield and were active in the community.

Sal owned Hackert and Monti Realty with longtime business partner, the late Jim Hackert. He quickly became a pillar of Main Street and a community leader. Sal was honored to moderate town meetings, serve as President of the Ridgefield Rotary Club, and help develop the Ridgefield Golf Course.

Few people in Ridgefield have not been touched by Sal’s charisma. Whether they live in a house he built or sold, enjoyed his smile on his daily walk, or played on the Ridgefield Golf Course, they have felt Sal’s incredible joy of life.

He truly enjoyed dining with Hilda at all the local restaurants, spending time at Great Pond with his children and playing with his grandchildren in Ballard Park.

Salvatore is predeceased by his loving wife Hilda, his father, James; mother, Dominica; brothers, Thomas and Vincent; and sister, Rose. Salvatore is survived by his four daughters and their spouses and children: Sally and Michael Proto of Chester, MD; Diane and Joseph Catania (Joseph, Jr. and Andrew) of Salisbury, CT; Andrea and Robert Lavery (Brendan and Siobhan) of West Hartford, CT; Priscilla and Wayne Pellenberg (Charles) of Virginia Beach, VA. He also leaves behind his sisters, Agnes Troy and Maryanne St. John, Brothers-in-law Daniel P. St. John, Nicholas Augustus, and William Kimbell; Sister-in-law Eileen Apy; and his nieces and nephews.

A Catholic Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, August 15, 2015 at 10:15 am at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church. A graveside service with military honors will follow at St. Mary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to a charity of your choice.

The Monti family welcomes guests to a reception at St. Mary Day Chapel following the services.
