Robert E. MacAvoy, 71, management CEO, outdoorsman

Robert E. MacAvoy, 71, of Ridgefield, husband of Suzanne (Doyle) MacAvoy, died on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at Smilow Cancer Center, New Haven, CT.

Known to his friends as “Bob,” he was born in Harrisburg, PA, October 31, 1941, son of the late Edward and Helen (Barno) MacAvoy.  He attended Bishop McDevitt High School in Harrisburg, received his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Villanova and his Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Pittsburgh.

A resident of Ridgefield since 1970, Bob was co-founder, President, and CEO of Easton Consultants of Stamford, CT, a management consulting firm established in 1983. His profession allowed him to travel the globe and wrestle with “big questions.” In word and deed, he “thought big.”

Bob was a passionate outdoorsman, traveler, and reader. He dreamed of scaling the Grand Teton near Jackson Hole, WY (the biggest peak in the Tetons). He skied as much as possible, read as many books as possible, and was always looking for the next adventure. At the age of 70, nine months before his death, he spent a week rafting the biggest whitewater in North America and hiking the Grand Canyon with fourteen close friends and family members.

When he was diagnosed with stage IV cancer in July of 2012, he said he wanted to spend two of his remaining months in Jackson Hole, WY in the big country he loved. Although he never got there, his spirit was there already. Until the very end, his dreams stayed big. Six weeks before he died, he flew to California to see his grandchildren.

In April, his oldest son Stephen will be married, and Bob will be there in the hearts of each and every one of us.

In addition to Suzanne, his wife of 47 years, Bob is survived by a daughter, Leslie A. MacAvoy and her partner, Parks Scott of Asheville, NC; two sons, Stephen E. MacAvoy and his fiancée Mary Kazantseva of Takoma Park, MD and Michael C. MacAvoy and his wife, Tessa of Hillsborough, CA; a brother, Mark MacAvoy and his wife Barbara of Novato, CA; four grandchildren, Alexis, Charlotte, Julia and Violet, as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Bob was predeceased by a brother and sister in law, Joel MacAvoy and Joyce MacAvoy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, February 21, 2013, at St. Mary Church in Ridgefield at 1:15 PM. Interment will take place in St. Mary Cemetery, Ridgefield.

The family will receive friends in the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah St., Ridgefield on Thursday from 10:45 am to 12:45 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Ridgefield Fire Dept. Ambulance Fund, 6 Catoonah St., Ridgefield, CT  06877 would be greatly appreciated.
