Obituary: Robert F. Thompson, 87, formerly of Ridgefield

Robert Francis Thompson, age 87, a resident of Annapolis, MD, died on March 18, 2018 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. He was the husband of Virginia DuBon Thompson. His first wife, Cynthia, predeceased him in 2003.

Mr. Thompson was born in Richmond Hill, NY, son of the late Helen Thompson Mc Cann and the late Francis H. Thompson. He resided in St. Albans, NY, Pensacola, FL, Flushing, NY and for 41 years in Ridgefield, CT, prior to moving to Annapolis in 2005.

Mr. Thompson graduated from St. Francis College in Brooklyn, NY, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. He attended New York University’s Graduate School of Credit and Financial Management at Dartmouth College. He proudly served the U.S. Navy 1951-1955.

Mr. Thompson was employed by American Can Company retiring in 1988 as Assistant Treasurer after completing 29 years of service. After his retirement he served as President of the National Association of Credit Management in 1989 and then as President of the Credit Research Foundation from 1989 to 1993 both located in Columbia, MD. Returning to his home in Ridgefield, he was named Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of SAC of America in Ridgefield from 1993 to his retirement in 1998. He has served as a member of the board of directors of Morgan Foods, Inc., Austin, IN since 1989 and of National Fruit Product Co., Inc., Winchester, VA, 1998 to 2006.

During his business career, Mr. Thompson was active in several financial associations, serving as chairman of the board of the New York Credit and Financial Management Association from 1985 to 1988, as a trustee of the Credit Research Foundation and as a director of the National Association of Credit Management.

He was predeceased by his first wife of 51 years, Cynthia and is survived by his wife Virginia, sons Stephen (Marie)) of Hayesville, NC, and David (Susan) of Clinton, CT, stepdaughter Diane Kostelak, Redwood City, CA, beloved grandchildren, Brian (Natasha), Sarah, Kelly, Andrew and Christopher and many nieces and nephews including Diane Thompson Fossi (Joseph), Ridgefield, CT.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Parish, 109 Duke of Gloucester St, Annapolis, MD on Saturday March 24th, 2018 at 10:30 am. Interment will be private.
