Obituary: Louise Vaughan, 88

Louise Strother (Miller) Vaughan, 88, wife of the late Stephen Bradford Vaughan, of Farmington Woods, Avon, died Friday, April 13, 2018. She lived for 25 years in West Simsbury before moving to Avon.

Born August 2, 1929, in Washington, VA, daughter of the late Achsah (Dudley) and Clarence Jackson Miller Jr., she graduated from Stuart Hall, Staunton, VA, and Hollins College, Roanoke, VA where she received her BA in Economics and Sociology. Upon graduation, she was a social worker with Charlottesville, VA, Department of Public Welfare and, between 1954-60, was Secretary in the office of VA Senator Harry Flood Byrd, United States Senate.

Louise married Steve in 1957 and raised two sons, Brad and Jack, in New Rochelle, NY, Ridgewood, NJ, and Huntington (Long Island), NY, before moving to Simsbury. After years of raising her family, Louise became a Special Education Aide in the Simsbury School System retiring in 1996.

She was a past member for 40 years, of Christ Episcopal Church, Avon and now a member of St. James Episcopal Parish, Farmington, Abigail Phelps Chapter of National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and Charter Oak Chapter of Colonial Dames XVII Century. She volunteered weekly at McLean Home for many years.

Survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law: Stephen Bradford Vaughan Jr. of Bainbridge Island, Washington, and Jackson Miller Vaughan and Lynn Lewis Vaughan of Ridgefield; a sister, Frances Miller Wood of Atlanta, GA; and five grandchildren: Griffin Brooks, Shelby Taylor and Riley Grace Vaughan, and Miller Bradford and Claybrook Jackson Vaughan.

Her Funeral Service will be Saturday, April 21, at 2 p.m., at St. James Parish, 3 Mountain Road, Farmington, with the Rev. George Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Curtiss Cemetery, Wildwood Road, Simsbury. Friends are invited to a reception following services, from 4-6 p.m., at Farmington Woods Club House — North Lounge. There are no calling hours.
