Joan Youmans Cozens, a former longtime Ridgefield resident, died peacefully on July 24 in Nantucket, Mass. The wife of the late William E. Cozens, she had just turned 91.

She was born on July 21, 1927, in New York City, the daughter of Charles L. and Edna Huott Youmans. She grew up in Irvington, N.Y. The family moved to Cuba in 1942 when her father was assigned as a military attaché. She attended the American School in Havana, graduating in 1945. She attended Wellesley College (Class of 1949) and after graduation moved to New York City, where she worked in cancer research at the Sloan Kettering Institute.

She married her husband in 1953 and the family moved to Ridgefield in 1964. She lived in town for nearly 30 years, raising six children. She was active in the Ridgefield Public Schools and was co-president of the East Ridge Middle School PTA (along with her husband) in the late 1970s. She was also active at Sacred Heart Church in Georgetown, and the Visiting Nurses Association. She worked as a realtor in town for Gary Bryant Real Estate in the 1980s.

After her husband passed away in 1986, she earned her Master’s Degree at Fairfield University.

A traveler, writer, real estate broker, volunteer, voracious reader and crossword puzzle expert, Joan was beloved by all who knew her, especially for her sense of humor and warmth, and she will be missed.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, William (Tim) Cozens; a grandson, William Soverino; and second husband Richard Mercer. She is survived by five children: Peter Cozens of Denver, Colo.; Michael Cozens of Portland, Ore.; John Cozens of Ridgefield; and Patrick Cozens of North Carolina; and a daughter, Kate Soverino of Nantucket. She is also survived by 24 grandchildren, including Patrick, Duncan, Timothy, Christopher and Annie of Ridgefield; and two great-grandchildren, Joscelyn Cozens of Dodgeville, Wis., and William Malachy Bridges of North Carolina.

There will be no service but a celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
