Obituary: Dorothy A. Crofut, 99, formerly of Ridgefield

Dorothy A. Crofut, 99, of Danbury, formerly of Ridgefield, died on Friday, March 9, 2018 at Bethel Health Care, Bethel, CT.

Born in Great Neck, New York on January 16, 1919 to William and Elizabeth (Clark) Niemeyer, Dorothy was known for her kindness and generosity of spirit as well as her quick wit and humor, and vivid imagination.

She was an active and devoted member of many groups: The Redding Grange, of which she was a member for 40 years, welcomed her faithful and vibrant presence; she was a consistent volunteer for bake sales and pancake suppers. Her tomatoes often won her Grange blue ribbons, and her jokes at meetings were beloved by all members.

She was also a faithful devotee of the Ridgebury Congregational Church, and participated in The United Methodist Church of Danbury’s outreach program Helping Hands, stuffing pillows and sewing blankets for the needy and various charity groups.

A member of The Audubon Society, many neighbors in Danbury recall her fondness for flora and fauna: an active gardener and always feeding birds and stray pets that wandered to her yard.

She was a loving and devoted wife to the late Marvin R. Crofut; caring mother to Beth S. Harper, William M. Crofut (wife Linda), Robert J. Crofut and the late Gail E. Crofut, and affectionate and giving grandmother or “Gram” to her grandchildren: Amy Harper Cargill, Lauren Harper Lynn and Derek and Brett Crofut; great-grandmother of Maren Cargill, Shaelyn Cargill and Lainey Lynn. She was a loving mother-in-law to the late Bruce Harper, and a friend and sister to the late Helen Kehoe, with whom she shared a special relationship.

She most recently lived at Ridgefield Crossings assisted living center, where for the past six months she could be found participating in and enjoying many of the activities. She will be remembered for her jokes, her optimism, her great cooking, and her passionate devotion and love for her family and friends.
