Michael Skandera, 89, Ridgefield teacher

Michael Skandera, 89, of Danbury, died at his home on Friday, March 28, 2014. He was a master teacher in Ridgefield Public Schools for 45 years.

Mr. Skandera was born in Danbury, son of the late Daniel and Elizabeth (Holick) Skandera. He was a graduate of Danbury High School and the former Danbury State Teachers College. He went on to receive his doctor of education degree from Teachers College of Columbia University in New York City, and was a master teacher in Ridgefield public schools for 45 years.

He was a golfer with five holes-in-one and numerous tournament wins, and was an active member of the Ridgewood Country Club.

A captain in the U.S. Army Air Force, he was a 50-mission bomber pilot in World War II.

He was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where he served as superintendent of the Sunday school, and a longtime member of Danbury Sokol Lodge No. 30, where he participated in gymnastics and served as a vice president.

He also received a sports award from the Old Timers Athletic Association of Greater Danbury.

In addition to his wife Anne (Parnas) Skandera, he is survived by his sons, Mark Skandera of Bethlehem, Pa., and Randall Skandera of Danbury, his brother Emil Skandera of Danbury, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers John and Daniel Skandera and sisters Elizabeth Van Geons and Anne Curesky.

Funeral services will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 44 Spring Street, Danbury, on Wednesday, April 2, at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury, on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Regional Hospice and Home Care of Western Connecticut, 39 Old Ridgebury Road, P.O.
