Martha Moffett Forbes, 95, longtime Ridgefielder, Meals on Wheels volunteer

Martha Moffett Forbes, a longtime Ridgefielder and Meals on Wheels volunteer, died on Monday, Sept. 30,   at the age of 95.

Mrs. Forbes was born in China of missionary parents on Aug. 31, 1918 and lived there until coming to the U.S. to go to Agnes Scott College.

In 1945 she married Griswold Forbes whose grandfather George Newton had settled in Ridgefield in the early 1900’s. In 1960, they moved back to the family home, which had been built around 1908 by the noted American artist, Frederick Remington.

In their later years, she and “Toby,” as Griswold was known, drove for Ridgefield’s Meals on Wheels and F.I.S.H. After Mr. Forbes died in 1998, Mrs. Forbes continued with Meals on Wheels as long as she could.

Her last months were spent in the special care of Hancock Hall in Danbury.

She is survived by her daughter Pauline F. Johnson of Cobalt; her son, Michael N. Forbes and his wife, Isabel C. Forbes, of Ridgefield; her sister in law, Allison F. Dench of Lewes, Del.; and two grandchildren, Cameron Forbes of Homer, Alaska, and Lucie Forbes of Eureka Springs, Arkansas.

A memorial service will be held at St Stephen’s Church  this Saturday, Oct. 5, at 2  p.m. with a reception afterwards at North Hall.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Meals on Wheels of Ridgefield, 25 Gilbert Street, Ridgefield CT 06877.
