Margaret "Peggy" Nye, 92, school librarian

Margaret “Peggy” Werner Nye died peacefully at home on Nov. 5, 2014, after a long illness.

Mrs. Nye was born in Cooperstown, N.Y., to Louanna (Bowen) and J. William Werner on July 23, 1922.

She grew up in Hudson Falls, N.Y., alongside her two brothers, William Werner and Scott Werner. Mrs. Nye received her Associate’s degree from Green Mountain College, and served for many years on the Green Mountain Alumni Board.

She received her Bachelor’s degree from University of Virginia, where she met her husband, Frank H. Nye, Jr. They were married in July, 1944; and after WWII, settled first in Bedford Village, N.Y., and then in Ridgefield, where they lived for almost 40 years.

She and Frank moved to Heritage Village in Southbury in 1993.

Mrs. Nye may be remembered as the librarian at Barlow Mountain Elementary School and then Farmingville Elementary School, both in Ridgefield. After retiring from her long teaching career, she volunteered at Danbury Hospital; and was known as ‘Grandma Nye’ to Mrs. Banville’s class at Gainfield Elementary School where she visited regularly to read to the children.

Mrs. Nye’s family said she was a woman of deep faith, and volunteered her time and loving care to Jesse Lee United Methodist Church in Ridgefield, and to UCC Southbury.

Mrs. Nye is survived by her husband of 70 years, Frank Nye; by three daughters, Susie Allen of Boxborough, Mass., Julie Pope, of Southbury, and Jennifer Walsh, of Oakland, Calif.; by 10 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Her son, Scott H. Nye, died in 1972.

A memorial service will be held at UCC Southbury on Sunday, Nov. 23, at 1 p.m. A private burial will take place in Keene, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations in Peggy’s memory can be made to UCC Southbury, Green Mountain College, and Star Island Corporation.
