Joan Smith, 80, pianist, volunteer

Joan (McIntosh) Smith, 80, of Sherman, CT formerly of Ridgefield and Stamford passed away at home on Tuesday, September 16, 2014.

Joan was born on November 17, 1933 in Stamford, CT. She was the daughter of the late Ethel Augusta (Morgan) and Robert McIntosh. She grew up in Stamford and attended Stamford High School; she graduated in 1952.

She married the late Jeffery Alvin Smith in 1954; Joan and Jeffery were married for 45 years.

Joan raised six children, Jeffery Smith, David Smith, Randy Smith, Deborah Gonnoud, Faith Cooney and Hope Barbir.

She worked as a Data Management Clerk for many years; most of her work was done with computers.

A Sherman resident for the past 13 years since moving from Ridgefield, Joan attended Gaylordsville United Methodist Church.

Joan enjoyed playing the piano; she volunteered for many years in local nursing homes by playing and singing as well as assisting with prayer services as part of a local nursing home ministry. She loved singing Christian hymns; this was a true sign of her deep faith.

She was known affectionately as “Jolly Joan” as she always had a smile on her face. She was truly a unique woman; she will certainly be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

In addition to her children, Joan is survived by a sister, Barbara Laughinghouse. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Gaylordsville United Methodist Church; 687 Kent Road, Gaylordsville, CT.

Interment will take place in Fairfield Memorial Park; 230 Oaklawn Avenue, Stamford, CT on Monday, September 22, 2014 at 10:00 am.

Calling hours will be held at Kane Funeral Home; 25 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield, CT on Friday evening, September 19, 2014 from 6 to 9 pm.
