James F. Whalen dies at 81; services on July 22

James F. Whalen, 81, of Ridgefield, CT and Bonita Springs, FL, passed away on Monday, July 15, 2013. He was the husband of Leila (O'Connor) Whalen.

Jim was born July 24, 1931 in Brooklyn, NY to Elizabeth and James Whalen.  He was predeceased by his parents and sisters Mary and Ellen. He grew up in Larchmont, NY, graduated from Lehigh University in 1953 and married his wife of fifty-four years, Leila, in 1959. They raised their family in Greenwich, CT.  He was a former member of the Milbrook Club.

Mr. Whalen was a US Army Veteran, serving during the Korean War. He began his career in Human Resources at the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company of NY. In 1969, he joined the United States Trust Company of New York, retiring in 1992 as Senior Vice President of Human Resources.

Jim loved spending time with his family, playing golf and travelling.

In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by daughter Leila and her husband Philip Longo of Bedford, NY; son James F. Whalen (Jeff) and his wife Deborah of Wilmette, IL and daughter Mary Whalen of Branford, CT. His eleven grandchildren include Elizabeth, Kevin, Connor and Brian Longo; Corey, Seamus, Aregash and Degiinet Whalen and Leila, Brendan and Aidan Strebel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 22, 2013 at 10:15 am in St. Mary Church, Ridgefield.

Friends will be received in the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah St., Ridgefield on Sunday, July 21, 2013 from 3 PM to 5 PM.

Burial will take place in St. Mary-Putnam Cemetery, Greenwich, CT.
