Dorothy Cooney Galligan, a Ridgefielder for a half century who was active in St. Mary Parish, died May 28 at her home. She was 82 years old.

Mrs. Galligan was born in New York City on Nov. 10, 1929, daughter of Luke and Alice Nelson Cooney. The 13th of 16 children, she was born and grew up in the Bronx. She married John Patrick Galligan in New York City in 1951.

In 1962, Mrs. Galligan and her husband moved to Ridgefield.

“Their home was the focus of raising their family of five children and making that home a warm and loving place,” her family said. “She had a flair for interior decorating; her home reflected love of the Colonial and Victorian eras which attracted her so strongly to the town of Ridgefield. She enjoyed baking and sharing those baked delights with her loved ones, especially her grandchildren.”

She was a member of St. Mary Parish and participated in the Marriage Encounter Program as well as serving as a Eucharistic Minister. She attended daily Mass and could be seen walking on Main Street with the friends she met through her participation in church activities.

“Always ready with a kind word and a genuine interest in others, Mrs. Galligan was an affirming presence in the community,” her family said. “All this was rooted in the deep spirituality which was fostered by her faith and the strong friendships she had cultivated in this faith-filled setting.”

Mrs. Galligan is survived by her son, Michael Galligan of Ridgefield, and daughter-in-law, Nancy, of Vero Beach, Fla.; her daughters, Dorothy Doty and husband, William, of Ridgefield; Mary Feneley and husband, Craig, of Oak Hill, Va.; Bernadette Haight of Brentwood, Tenn.; daughter-in-law Stacy Galligan of Washington, Conn.; and her grandchildren, Shannon Galligan of Vero Beach; Thomas and Patrick Doty of Ridgefield; Bryant, Jennafer, and Erin Galligan of Washington; Michael and Jack Feneley of Oak Hill; Kelsey and Alden Haight of Brentwood; her sisters, Martha Hanna of Toms River, N.J., and Helen Trahey of Harrison, N.Y. ; and her brother John Cooney of East Rutherford, N.J.
