Donald G. Allan, 83, clothier, gardener

Donald G. Allan, 83, of Ridgefield, husband of Bette (Matthews) Allan, died on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Danbury Hospital. A Ridgefield native, Mr. Allan was born September 2, 1930, son of Edwin and Jean (Blair) Allan. He attended Ridgefield schools and graduated from Ridgefield High School in the class of 1948. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from 1948 to 1952.

In 1955, Donald and his brother, Edwin, purchased the former Paterson’s Clothing Store, relocating it to 440 Main Street and renaming it Allan’s. Don and Ed operated the business until their retirement in 1981. He enjoyed gardening and was an all-around handy man. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family, most especially with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Don was a member of Masonic Lodge #49 of Ridgefield and the First Congregational Church.

In addition to his wife, Bette, of sixty years, he is survived by a son, Rev. Mark D. Allan and his wife, Barbara, of Pawling, NY; a daughter, Bonnie McCarthy and her husband, Richard, of Ridgefield; four grandchildren, Michael McCarthy, Brian McCarthy, Sean Allan and Blair Allan; three great grandchildren, Kevin Nolan, Fiona Nolan, and Seamus Allan and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will take place in the First Congregational Church, 102 Main Street, Ridgefield, on Friday, June 20, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Charles Hambrick-Stowe, Sr. Pastor, officiating. There will be no calling hours.
