Desmond Reilly, 70, IBM systems engineer, nurse, volunteer

Desmond “Des” Reilly, 70, of Ridgefield, passed away on Monday, February 11, 2013 at Danbury Hospital following complications of a stroke suffered on February 8.

Des was the fourth son of Garrett and Johanna (Cullinane) Reilly of County Kerry, Ireland. He was born in New York, NY, April 16, 1942 and graduated from New York  University.

Upon graduation, he was hired by IBM as a Systems Engineer.  He later decided to go back to Quinnipiac College to obtain a nursing degree. He was employed at the Mt. Vernon Hospital and retired five years ago.

Des is the beloved brother of Mary Reilly (Haakon) Reinertsen of Ridgefield, James (Mary) Reilly of South Salem, NY, John F. (Gale) Reilly of Acworth, GA and Gerald (Florence) Reilly of Castle Rock, CO. He is the adored uncle to Kevin, John, Siobhan, Maura, Sean, Terence, Ryan, Kerry and Heather and great uncle to Lauren, Jimmy, Molly, Hanna, Cara, Jack, Kerry, Clare, Olivia, Conor, Eamon, Braeden, Maeve, Aidan,  Samantha, Peter, Kelly, and Brien.

He was also active in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) with the Literacy Volunteers of America of Danbury.

Des was a very special person and will be missed by all who knew him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 10:15 AM in St. Mary Church, Ridgefield.  Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.  The family will receive friends in the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah St., Ridgefield on Friday, February 15, 2013 from 4 PM to 8 PM.
