David Braun, 81, chemical engineer

David Bernard Braun, of Ridgefield, died at Danbury Hospital on Sunday morning, September 9, 2012.

Mr. Braun was born in Buffalo, New York on November 29, 1930, son of the late Clara and Bernard Braun. He attended Christian Brothers' Academy, was graduated from the University of Buffalo, and was employed as a chemical engineer by the Union Carbide Corporation. Upon his retirement from Union Carbide after 35 years, he worked for RT Vanderbilt Corporation in Norwalk, CT for another 15 years. He acquired several chemical patents during his career and was considered an expert in the field of polymers.

Mr. Braun and his wife, the late Lorraine Cleary Braun, lived in Ridgefield from 1972 until they retired to Harwich Port, MA on Cape Cod in 1996.

In his retirement on Cape Cod, Mr. Braun enjoyed woodworking and bridge and was a master gardener and a much-sought-after instructor of furniture upholstery. He was on the boards of the Harwich Port Library and the Council on Aging. He was also an active member of the Harwich Port Barber Shop Quartet organization, and won "Barber Shopper of the Year" in 2006. He was an avid collector of classic movies. He was also a published author, producing several chemical reference guides

Mr. Braun moved to Ridgefield Crossings Assisted Living in 2010 and was Vice President of the Resident's Association and taught and played bridge.

Mr. Braun is survived by three daughters and a son, Dianne Braun Hanley and her husband Paul of Ridgefield; Katherine Braun Lasberg and her husband Lee of Ridgefield; Laura Braun Hellstern and her husband Tom of Herndon VA and David Michael Braun and his wife, Derrie of North Attleboro, MA. He is survived by grandchildren Megan Hanley McQuail, Connor Hanley; Hugh, Caroline, and Kitty Lasberg; Cameron and Michael Hellstern; and Rebecca, Bridget, and Michael Braun.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at 12 noon at St. Mary Church in Ridgefield, CT.

There will be no calling hours. In leiu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
