Adeline M. Bengtson, 84, longtime Ridgefielder, SNET operator

Adeline M. Bengtson, 84, longtime resident of Ridgefield CT, left this world with her family at her side on Monday, June 11, 2012.

She was born on May 12th 1928, the only daughter of Emily (Schaefer) and Richard Meyer in Ozone Park, Queens, New York. She attended PS 108 and John Adams High Schools. She was Grand Worthy Advisor New York State chapter of the Order of Rainbow for Girls in 1948. Her involvement in Rainbow would cover several decades and she maintained those friendships for her lifetime. Adeline organized annual conventions for the entire State of New York.

She married her beloved husband Fredrick Bengtson on April 30th 1950 and traveled during their first years of marriage to Oklahoma, New Mexico and Colorado before settling back in Queens, NY, where they had 3 children. In 1964 they moved to Ridgefield where the family settled and she spent the rest of her life.

Mrs. Bengtson maintained the home and in 1974 she took a position with Southern New England Telephone Co as an operator. Her career spanned 19 years in various positions: residential and business customer representatives, union shop steward, and were United Way liaison for 4 years.  She would go on to be co-owner of a flower store and boat management businesses through the 1980’s. She was assistant leader of her daughter’s Girl Scout troop in the 1960’s and active in the First Congregational Church. She later joined the West Redding Unitarian Universalist Society where she is still a member of the congregation that has moved to Danbury. She was a volunteer at Danbury Hospital and has been active in various human rights movements.

Mrs. Bengtson is the loving mother of three children, daughters Linda Mihalik and her husband Bruce of Cleveland OH, Diana Robertson and her husband Dale of Ridgefield CT and a son, Eric Bengtson and partner Liz Cooper of Newtown CT. She is also survived by eight grand children, Megin, Justin, Carolyn Joy, Erika, Emily, Andrew, Jessica and Samantha. She is predeceased by her husband of 41 years, Fredrick I. Bengtson.
