Letter: Trump’s attacks on freedom of speech should be stopped

To the Editor:

Donald Trump is trying to build a wall. If he is successful (let us hope he is not), it will be puny compared to our sacred wall that already exists, and has existed for over 200 years.

Trump and his team of attorneys are attempting to block the sale of Michael Wolff’s book Fire and Fury. Such an unconscionable act is a fierce attack on freedom of speech and freedom of the press guaranteed in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The Constitution and the federal court system comprise the great wall of defense that can prevent our democracy from being transformed into a fascist dictatorship. As long as Trump remains in office, that wall will be tested time after time.

If Trump should succeed in cracking that wall, it will be because his congressional Republican puppets are too cowardly to stop him, and it will be the saddest day in the history of our country.

Let us hope that this never happens, and that our sacred wall remains forever strong.
