Letter: Plans for Main Street should not go forward

To the Editor:

I agree with the letter written last week by Sean O’Kane, Helen Demos and Elizabeth DiSalvo that the construction proposed by the state DOT for Ridgefield’s town business area should not go forward.

The DOT’s principal motivation for this project is to speed up the traffic through our business center. This may be good for drivers but not for shoppers and other people trying to use and enjoy the downtown area. The proposed excavation of Main Street from Governor to Catoonah streets in order to lower the roadway a few inches will create significant disorder for a prolonged period of time.

Finally, the placement of a truck unloading zone in front of one of St. Stephen’s properties in the historic district is something that the members of our Historic District Commission have long opposed.
