Letter: Gun misinformation

To the Editor:

Again in the letters to The Press of March 29, misinformation and illogical reasoning were on display. Ms. Handlers, automatic weapons have been illegal for decades. Rifles used today require one pull on the trigger for one shot fired. “Military-style” means the gun looks like a military weapon, it does not change the function in any way. Note that we already have strict background checks. That the government doesn’t follow through by notifying gun dealers is a government failure.

Ms. Gordon compares gun ownership to nuclear weapons owned by North Korea and Iran. Bad actors should not own nuclear weapons because they threaten peaceful countries. Criminals and the mentally ill in the U.S. are not allowed to own guns legally. When they do, it is a failure of enforcement of laws already on the books and inadequate mental health laws. Our nuclear weapons are a deterrent to an attack on us. Good guys with guns can stop criminals and mass shooters, although you almost never see that reported in the news. Since 1950 nearly all public mass shootings have been in gun free zones.

Note that 25% of all gun crime happens in Baltimore, Chicago, Washington, D.C. and Detroit.  These cities all have strict gun laws.

While the recent marches may have started off as remembrance vigils for the Parkland victims, it quickly morphed into a gun-ban movement organized and funded by progressive and liberal groups such as MoveOn, Planned Parenthood, etc., using uninformed kids as pawns.

Why the focus on guns when knives, medical errors, and cars each kill thousands more people than guns? A government that disarms its citizens controls its citizens. Read the histories of every dictator for the last 200+ years. Not here, you think? No, not as long as we have a viable Second Amendment.
