To the Editor:

To Linda Lavelle’s point, mechanically, all rifles do work pretty much the same way.

But that’s like saying I could replace the hammer in my tool box with a rock; my slot screwdriver with a dime. Differences that Ms. Lavelle so blithely dismisses as “cosmetic” are relevant to their purpose.

I’ve hiked the Appalachian Trail from New Hampshire into Virginia and met many hunters, not a one of them carrying an AR-15 because the AR-15 is not a hunting tool unless one is hunting humans.
