April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month, a time dedicated to acknowledging people, who are living with Parkinson’s disease, and working to find a cure. Parkinson’s disease, which is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects motor, movement, functions in the individual. People with Parkinson’s may experience tremors, limb rigidity, difficulty walking, or balance issues. According to Parkinson.org, Parkinson’s disease currently affects 1 million Americans, and the numbers keep increasing. This number is expected to reach 1.2 million by the year 2030.

While there is currently no cure for Parkinson’s, there are certainly treatment options available to those who suffer with its symptoms. The RVNAhealth Rehabilitation and Wellness Center has an excellent team of physical, occupational, and speech therapists, many certified in LSVT, Lee Silverman Voice Treatment, to accurately aid those with Parkinson’s. We also offer in-home services where a therapist will come to your home for treatment.

Beginning May 3, our Rehabilitation and Wellness Center, located at our Ridgefield location, will be offering Big for Life, and Loud for Life classes every Tuesday, and Thursday, that are designed to help those with Parkinson’s increase their movement, and combat struggles that are related to Parkinson’s. Loud for Life classes, to be held on Tuesdays, will focus on vocal exercises to maintain effective communication. Big for Life classes, to be held on Thursdays, will include a set of exercises, and activities designed to help practice functional movements.
