Violet Maude Baker, 92, former Ridgefielder
Former Ridgefield resident Violet Maude Baker died in her home in West Palm Beach, Fla., on Monday, Aug. 11, 2014. She was preceded in death by her husband James Albert Baker.
Mrs. Baker was the only surviving twin born to the late Eustace and Miriam Stewart on May 27, 1922, in Clonmel, Saint Mary’s Parish, Jamaica. She was raised by her grandmother “Mimi” Williams.
After finishing school, Violet moved to Kingston, Jamaica, where she worked as a seamstress. There she met and later married her husband.
After Mr. Baker migrated to Ridgefield, Mrs. Baker joined him in 1952.
They had four children — twin daughters Joan Veronica and Janet Beverly, James Anthony and Marcia Elaine.
Ms. Baker worked as a dedicated psychiatric nurse’s aide at Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan until her retirement in 1987. She was an active member of Jesse Lee Memorial Methodist Church. She served in numerous capacities, including as a Sunday school teacher. She was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Stars, serving in Deborah Chapter #21, O.E.S.
Mr. and Mrs. Baker relocated to West Palm Beach in 1988. During her retirement, she enjoyed gardening and traveling.
Some of Violet’s favorite past times included spending time with her family, supporting her children and grandchildren in their endeavors, sewing, entertaining friends and cooking. Family and friends said that her jerk pork was unparalleled, scrumptious and always left you wanting more.
In addition to a host of extended family and friends, Ms. Baker is survived by her children Joan Harris (James A. Harris), of California; Janet Sims, of Florida; sJames Baker (Karen), of Danbury; and Marcia Rodrigues, of Maryland; nine grandchildren: Michael Sims (Fiona) of Australia, Keegan Sims (Kellie) of California, Craig Harris (Shari) of California, Shanisha Roberts (Moses) of California, Atira Harris of California, India and Edward Rodrigues of Maryland, and Kendra and Sage Baker of Danbury; seven great-grandchildren: Zackary, Chaunte, Tenzin and James Sims of Australia; Terrell Nelson-Harris and Caden Harris of California; and Malia Roberts of California.
