Longtime Ridgefield, CT, resident and business owner, Verna R. Childs passed away in her families home, in Gilbert, AZ, Tuesday, October 14th, 2014, at 88 years of age, after her courageous battle with cancer.  She was preceded in death by her husband Hal Childs, and is survived by her children, Kevin Childs, Craig Childs, Scott Childs, Jody Childs Gagne, and Tracy Childs Montanari.

She is also survived by her eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Dwight, Cameron, Kali, Brody, Hattie, Teresa and Chance. Verna was born in Owosso, MI and grew up in the nearby town of Goodrich, MI.  Verna graduated from Goodrich High-school, and completed her education at General Motors Institute of Technology Business School.  Verna married Hal Childs, May 28th, 1960, and shortly after moved to Ridgefield, CT.

Verna was blessed with many careers including, modeling, modeling instructor, television advertising spokesperson, comptometer operator (whatever that is...) and an asst. mortgage loan officer at Guardian Federal Savings and Loan in Washington, DC, and completed her career, and most well known  as the Owner of The Yardage Shop, with her husband Hal, in Ridgefield, CT for over 20 years. Verna despised traveling, but found her way as a worldly traveler, having visited Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Puerto Rico.

Verna was an avid fan of football and was well known in town for her incredible Super Bowl parties and her undying love of the Washington Redskins, and her culinary skills with beef wellington, breaded veal cutlets, and Monte Cristo sandwiches.  Verna was known to share with her family, that she was “tested” and shown to have above average intelligence, though that often came into question due to her loyalty and love of the Washington Redskins…

Verna spent the last ten years living with her daughter Jody, her son-in-law Geoff, and her grand daughter Kali in Texas and Arizona.  Verna, was a mother to all, Nana to many, a friend to the world, woman of God, and devout Christian.  Verna can now be found in Heaven, enjoying everlasting life, spending time with past family and friends, singing in Heavens choir, and desperately praying for the Washington Redskins.

God Loves you Mom, Nana, Mrs. C…and the world will miss you.  Enjoy life everlasting.

Her family and friends will be having a celebration of her life Friday, October 24th, 2014 at the
