Susan Lamprey Johnson, teacher, volunteer, church member
Susan Doris Lamprey Johnson died June 14, 2012 following a brief illness at the Meadow Ridge Continuing Care Community in Redding, CT where she and her husband retired in 2000.
Sue was born March 28, 1924 to Randolph Hyde and Elsie Marie Corell Lamprey in New Rochelle, NY. Her family moved to Wilmette, IL in 1927 and then moved to White Plains, NY in 1938.
In 1942, Sue graduated from White Plains High School. In 1946, she graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University with a BA in Physical Education and Health and degrees in elementary and secondary education. While at Ohio Wesleyan she was a member of the Chi Omega social sorority, the Kappa Delta Pi educational society, the Theta Alpha Phi dramatic honorary and the Mortar Board senior women’s honorary.
After her graduation, she taught physical education and health at the Alexander Hamilton High School and the Hillside Avenue Elementary School in Elmsford, NY.
Sue married Ellsworth Potter Johnson on January 24, 1948. She is survived by her husband of 64 years and two sons — Douglas Potter Johnson of White Plains, NY and Walter Randolph Johnson of Bear, DE and his wife Susan Shaver Johnson. There are three grandchildren - Brian James Johnson and his wife Jessica Desiree Johnson and twins Peter Randolph and Rachel Sue Johnson. She is also survived by a niece, Pamela Sue Murray Clemmer and her family of Doylestown, PA. Sue’s sister Jane Murray died in 2009.
Sue has always been active in her community. She was a member of the Church in the Highlands in White Plains and served as a Trustee and Deacon. She was a member of the White Plains Women’s Club since 1938 and was president 1972-1974. She was a member of the White Plains Hospital Auxiliary and served on its board as well as on the Hospital Board of Directors. She was a hospital volunteer for 58 years. While living at Meadow Ridge, she was a member of the Country Store, Food & Beverage and Welcoming Committees.
Sue was employed as a secretary and bookkeeper for 25 years at the offices of the Heathcote Medical Associates in Scarsdale, NY.
After moving to Connecticut, Sue and Ellsworth have been members of the First Congregational Church of Ridgefield.
Burial will be in the Garden of the Apostles at the Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, NY.
There will be a memorial service on June 27th at 4:00 at the Meadow Ridge Continuing Care Community auditorium.
