Shirley M. Kibbe, 84, broadcaster, loved to garden
Shirley M. Kibbe, 84, passed from her Earthly life Tuesday, August 19, 2014 in the Cardiac Care Unit at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. She was born May 20, 1930 in Brockton, MA, the daughter of Frank and Alvis (Hannigan) Ippolito. She grew up and graduated High School in Whitman, MA. She attended the Leland-Powers School for Radio and Television Broadcasting in Boston where she met classmate Thomas Kibbe. Shirley and Tom married in 1953 and began their life together in Vermont where they worked as on-air talent for 2 radio stations in Rutland and St. Johnsbury. They later lived in Massachusetts and Michigan and then settled with their two daughters, Karen and Leanne in Ridgefield, Connecticut, making a home there for 30 years. While in Ridgefield, Shirley was very active in local theatre, performing in and directing productions with the Ridgefield Workshop of the Performing Arts and co-directing high school musicals for several years. She also was a frequently featured actress at the Southbury Playhouse.
When her husband retired in 1998, they moved to Enfield, NH, rekindling their love for the surroundings and lifestyle of northern New England. A devoted lifelong Catholic, she found a spiritual home at the LaSalette Shrine in Enfield. She was a member of the Ladies Guild, a Reader and a Eucharistic Lay Minister.
Shirley loved gardening, books, needlework, jigsaw puzzles, travel experiences and walks on the beach. She was an extraordinary cook and baker. Her chocolate chip cookies were particularly loved since she learned the original recipe from working at The Toll House restaurant in her home town. She was one of the last great letter and card writers, with her beautiful penmanship and commitment to never failing to recognize and remember meaningful dates and holidays for her large circle of friends and family. She lavished love on a series of special “Kibbe Cats” over the years. Shirley was also a great lover of wildlife. The hummingbirds, squirrels, chipmunks, turkeys and deer in her backyard were well-spoiled.
She was predeceased in January by Thomas her husband of 60 years. She will be deeply missed by her daughters, Karen Kibbe of Saint Augustine, FL and Leanne DeCamp and her husband Jonathan of Fair Haven, NJ; grandchildren David and Rebecca; a brother, Edward Kibbe and his wife Joanne of The Villages, FL; and a sister, Leona Kibbe of Clearwater, FL.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, August 23rd at 2 pm at the chapel of the Lasalette Shrine, Rte. 4A in Enfield, NH.
