Robert Helmus, 91, mechanic, salesman
Robert E. Helmus, 91, of Ridgefield, husband of the late Dorothy (Drummey) Helmus, died on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at Candlewood Valley Health Care Center, New Milford.
Mr. Helmus was born in Manhattan, New York, December 1, 1922, son of Adolph and Ottilie (Gaetgens) Helmus. Raised in the Queens, he attended Queens NY schools, Manhasset High School and graduated from St. Louis University with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering.
Mr. Helmus began his career as a civilian mechanic for medical supply aircraft during WW II and later with American Airlines.
He later became a salesman of electrical conductors with the Burndy Corp. of Norwalk and a company marketing analyst retiring in 1987 after 35 years of service. His favorite hobby during retirement was helping friends and family fix whatever needed fixing in their houses or yards.
A resident of Ridgefield since 1962 coming from Great Neck, L.I., NY, Mr. Helmus was a member of the Society of Aeronautical Engineers, a former Pop Warner football coach and election polls worker.
He was a member of the N.R.A., Ridgefield Rifle Club and the Wooster Mountain Gun Club of Danbury, and he was an avid hunter in his younger years.
Mr. Helmus is survived by three sons, Robert Helmus and his wife, Becky of Aspen, CO, Peter Helmus and his wife, June of New Milford, CT and Drew Helmus of Danbury, CT; a daughter, Lisa Evans and her husband, John Schapers, Sr. of New Milford; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will take place in St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, 6 Ivy Hill Rd., Ridgefield on Friday, August 8, 2014 at 1:30 p.m.
Interment will take place at the direction of the family.
There will be no calling hours.
