Richard E. Kalnins, Sr., of Ridgefield, a native of Latvia who became a construction executive, died peacefully  with his family by his side on Saturday, Aug. 24, at Danbury Hospital.  He was 89 years old and the husband of Ilga Lapins  Kalnins.

Mr. Kalnins was born in Riga, Latvia, on Feb. 15, 1924, son of the late Edward and Marija Silin Kalnins.

“Richard was an industrious man who immigrated to the United States from Latvia at the age of 27,” his family said.  “His determination and strong work ethic allowed him to retire as an executive vice president of F.D. Rich Co, a construction and development company in Stamford.”

He was a  craftsman who built his own home, with stonewalls and patios surrounding his wife’s gardens.

Upon retirement he became an avid stamp collector, a hobby he shared with his wife.

Besides wife of 67 years, Mr. Kalnins is survived by his two daughters, Antra Borofsky and her husband, Richard of Cambridge, Mass., and Mara Johnson and her husband, Garry of Madison, N.J.; his son, Richard E. Kalnins, Jr. and his wife, Siobhan of Watertown; his seven grandchildren, Nadine Mazzola, Larissa Borofsky, Rachel and Emily Johnson, Ryan, Grace and Ellen Kalnins.

He was predeceased by his sister, Edite Helffrich.

A celebration of Richard’s Life will be held at the Cornell Memorial Home on Monday, August 26th at 7:30 p.m.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening between the hours of 6:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Cremation and interment will take place at the convenience of the family.
