Obituary: Harold A. “Duddy” Mead, 88, Ridgefield native
Harold A. “Duddy” Mead, 88, a Ridgefield native, died January 22, 2018 in Oxford, Florida.
He was born in Ridgefield on April 29, 1929 to Louis and Estella Mead.
After graduation from Ridgefield High School where he was a four letter man (football, basketball, baseball and track) he enlisted in the Marines serving during the Korean War.
Duddy was past commander of the of the Everett Ray Seymour American Legion Post 78, Noble Grand of the Odd Fellows Pilgrim Lodge and the first president of the Ridgefield Townies Athletic Club. Through the Townies he was instrumental in the formation of Townies youth basketball league. He continued to participate in sports including basketball, fast pitch softball and bowling serving on many teams as captain. In the early 60s he was a candidate for First Selectman and was involved in the Democratic party. The Ridgefield Old Timers Association honored him in 1996.
He is survived by his sons, Harold (Maggie), Peter, Stuart (Alexandra), 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, sisters Arlene Comstock, Gladys Wells, and brother Richard (Peggy). Besides his parents he is preceded in death by his wife Joan (Pollard), daughter Melody, sister Beatrice Mills and brother Stuart.
