Obituary: Carmelita 'Carmie' Gregory, 101, of Ridgefield
Carmelita “Carmie” Gregory, 101, of Ridgefield, passed away on Monday, March 5, 2018. She was the loving wife of the late John F. Gregory and a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Mrs. Gregory was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on August 15, 1916, the daughter of the late James and Elizabeth (Burns) O’Shea.
As a teenager, she assumed the role as family caretaker after the death of her mother, graduated high school with highest honors and earned her B.A. degree from Brooklyn College at age 19, among the few women attending college in the 1930s. Later she returned to earn her M.S. in Education at Hofstra University.
Mrs. Gregory was a dedicated 30-year elementary teacher in Lynbrook, N.Y. She was passionate about her family, education, reading and cooking — a trait most cherished by her adoring grandchildren who to this day fondly remember her bunny pancakes as part of fun-filled weekends. She also enjoyed serving as a Girl Scout troop leader, PTA president, and was a generous contributor and volunteer for Catholic Charities.
After retiring from the New York State school system, Mrs. Gregory and her husband John lived in Florida and became avid golfers and travelers, including a treasured trip to the Vatican.
For the past 13 years, Mrs. Gregory resided at Ridgefield Crossings in Ridgefield, Conn., where she led group activities for residents in the Alzheimer’s unit, coordinated a Parkinson’s support group and was an adroit bridge player. Most of all, she was a perpetual learner, seamlessly adapting to new situations and technologies, including teaching herself how to design brochures on her computer.
She is survived by her three children John Gregory and his wife Jean; Susan Michener and her husband Daniel; and Peggy McDonnell and her husband Tony. Mrs. Gregory is also survived by five grandchildren Laura and husband Matt; David and wife Cindy; Michael and wife Melisa; Emmett; and Alison and husband Jesse as well as three great-grandchildren Casey, Carys and Margot.
Mrs. Gregory was predeceased by her parents, her husband John, her sister Susan and brother James.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday March 14, 2018, at 10:15 a.m., at St. Mary’s Church, 55 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield. Entombment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, 110 North Street, Ridgefield.
