Norman Anderton, 79, retired teacher, wrestling coach, active in church
Norman R. Anderton, 79, of Ridgefield and Redding, CT, passed away on Sunday, April 7, 2013 after a lengthy illness in Ridgefield.
He was born in Providence, Rhode Island, August 7, 1933, son of the late Ralph G. and Frances (Crawford) Anderton.
Norm was a lifelong high school English teacher, graduating from Brown University in '55, and holding two Master's degrees in teaching from Brown University and Fairfield University. Norm was also a widely respected athlete and wrestling coach-starting his wrestling career at Brown with his father (also a coach), and eventually coming to CT to teach and coach at Stamford High School from 1962-1978.
While in Rhode Island, 8 of his wrestlers became state champions and one went on to become a New England Champion. He started the Stamford H.S. varsity wrestling team in 1962-at the time Greenwich was the only other public school in the state to have an interscholastic wrestling team.
Norm continued his teaching career at Wilton High school. After retirement he settled in Ridgefield, working in landscaping, gardening and was a member of the First Congregational Church, becoming a Stephen Minister before becoming ill. He was known to many in the community for always having his canine companion along with him.
He leaves his daughter, Meredith and family; Rob, Jeremy and Jonathan Dorson of Lynn, Ma. He also leaves his son, Nathan and his family; Petra, gr.-children Heath, Mara and great gr-children; Zachary, Alana, Kaylin and Payton of Washington state. He also leaves his friend, Kathy Barry and his church friends.
