Michael J. Kearney, 81, of Ridgefield, husband of Patricia (Shoreys) Kearney, died on Friday, Jan. 8, at the Regional Hospice of Western CT in Danbury.

Mr. Kearney was born on April 8, 1934, in New York, N.Y., a son of the late William and Nora (Keating) Kearney. Raised in the Jackson Heights section of Queens, New York, he graduated from Rice High School in New York City and Iona College (Class of 1955) in New Rochelle, NY.

Upon graduation from college, Mr. Kearney served in the United States Navy aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Coral Sea and was honorably discharged. He then had a long career with Chevron Oil corporation working in its sales and marketing operations. He retired in 1996 after more than 30 years.

A resident of Ridgefield since 1981, he was a member of Founders Hall, volunteer at the Dorothy Day Hospitality House of Danbury, and member of St. Mary Parish in Ridgefield.

He enjoyed family gatherings, attending Rice H.S. and Iona Gaels basketball games, and listening to music, especially songs of his Irish heritage.

In addition to his wife of 50 years, he is survived by a son, Michael J. Kearney, Jr. and his wife Eileen of New York, N.Y.; a brother, William Kearney and his wife Virginia of Berwyn, Pa., and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, James A. Kearney in 1984, and by his siblings, James Kearney and Margaret “Peggy Ann” Coughlin.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Jan. 22, at 10:15 a.m. in St. Mary Church, 55 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield.

Interment will take place immediately following in St. Mary Cemetery, Ridgefield.

There will be no calling hours.
