Mary Frances (Begert) Waters passed away Sunday, January 4, 2015 at the Christiana Hospital in Newark, Delaware, after a nearly ten-year battle with cancer that she waged with inspiring grace, humor and courage. She was 59 years young.

With a generous soul and an infectious laugh, Mary was a devoted and beloved wife, mother, sister, daughter, aunt, cousin, niece and friend. She was also an accomplished professional, who spent the first half of her career in employment recruiting, and the last 20 years in marketing, business development and support services for engineering and technical consultants, where she continued working throughout her illness.

But most of all, Mary was a child of joy, full of life and wit and positive energy. She loved singing – carols, show tunes, and obscure vaudeville numbers she learned at her grandfather’s knee. She loved jokes and puzzles and would typically rip through the NY Times Sunday crossword – in pen! A voracious reader, she returned again and again to her favorites: The Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter, and the entire series of Oz books. She loved the beaches of Ocean City, Cape Cod and Maine. She was blessed with wonderful memories of her school days in New Jersey, Indiana and Connecticut. And Mary deeply loved her dad, John H. Begert, who passed away in 1992.  She thought about him every single day.

Mary leaves behind her husband of 27 years, Lawrence Waters of Newark, DE. Also surviving are her son and daughter Daniel and Maureen Waters of Newark; stepdaughter and stepson Kelly Waters Arnao and Brendan (Sadie) Waters of  Newark; her mother Elizabeth Begert of  Ridgefield, CT; sisters Joan (Bill) Soltesz of Redding, CT; Anne (John) Tropeano of New Canaan, CT:, Kathryn (Paul) Stevens of Danbury, CT: Clare (Mark) Perry of Danbury, CT; Eileen Bergmann of Norwalk, CT; and brothers John (Barbara) Begert of Bronxville, NY and Thomas (Stacy) Begert of Burlington, CT; eight nieces; six nephews; and dozens of cousins.

A Mass celebrating Mary’s life will be offered at 1:00PM on Saturday, January 24th at St. Mary’s Church in Ridgefield. A private internment will be at a later date.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Breast Center at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center, 4701 Ogletown-Stanton Road, Newark, DE 19713 - Attn: Tammy Brown.
