Marie LaSelva, 85, machinist, optimist, loved nature and family
Marie Vincenzina “Chin” LaSelva of Ridgefield passed away peacefully with her cats at her side, in her home on September 28, 2013.
Born in New York City, New York on June 18, 1928, Marie was one of 10 children. She is the daughter of the late Rosario V LaSelva, Sr and Maria (LoRusso) LaSelva of Bethel, CT, formerly, Pelham, NY. She was predeceased by her lifetime companion, Florence “Pat” Van Loan.
“Chin,” as she was known by her family and friends, lived life everyday to the fullest. She was an eternal optimist, always seeing the brighter side of life. Marie was an inspiration in every challenge life brought her. She started everyday thanking God for “giving me this day.” She really enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, always helping with whatever needed to be done. Her love, friendship and generosity to everyone she knew was extraordinary.
Blinded in one eye since childhood she achieved all that she set out to accomplish. She loved photography, drawing and pencil sketching. One day she waited for over an hour to photograph the ripple in a lake made by a drop of water that fell from the beak of a duck.
Chin and Florence loved to go antiquing and to flea markets. She was an avid reader with an extensive library.
Her whole being was her heart. Marie had a great sense of humor and spent many hours laughing hysterically and making those around her laugh with her. She had a vocabulary of her own that those closest to her understood.
Marie loved all animals and referred to her cats Peter and Paul as her “children.”
A true nature lover she lived in the perfect home on a lake where she enjoyed the outdoors, walks around the lake and all God’s creatures.
Her happiest days were spent from her teens into her later years playing softball. One team she played for was the Traendly Rosebuds and the year they won the Recreation Girls Softball League championship Marie achieved a batting average of .413.
Marie spent a lifetime working as a machinist into her 80’s, developing parts for the Hubbell Spacecraft, mammography machines and other vital medical equipment used to this day advancing the medical field.
Marie is survived by her brother Rosario LaSelva, Jr. of Bethel, CT, and sister Angela Scarano of Pelham, NY. She was predeceased by her sisters Anna Gaita of Norwalk, CT and Lucy LaSelva of Pelham, NY, her brothers, Vincent LaSelva, Carmen LaSelva, Vito LaSelva, Leo LaSelva and Kelly LaSalva. She is survived by a multitude of nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
May she rest in peace.
At Marie’s request there are no calling hours or burial services. A memorial mass is planned on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at 10:00 at St. Marys’ Church in Ridgefield.
