Leslie was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey on August 15, 1942 to Alfred Nogi and Vida Evans Nogi, first generation Hungarian and British immigrants (respectively) and educators in the Linden, New Jersey school district. She attended Allegheny College in Allegheny, PA, where she met her future husband, Robert Luminati. She went on to earn a Master’s degree from Keane University in New Jersey and served as a Certified Speech Pathologist in public schools in Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
