John Francis Sidonio Sr., 86, a resident of Dothan, Ala., died Wednesday, Jan. 7, after a brief illness.

Mr. Sidonio was born June 14, 1928, in Stamford, and lived there the early part of his life, joining the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. He later joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves and served for several years. He also served as a police officer with the Ridgefield Police Department, while living here for about 20 years.

He lived in Cape Coral, Fla., prior to moving to Dothan in 2005. Mr. Sidonio was of the Catholic faith and was a member of the Moose Lodge in Cape Coral and the DAV and VFW in Dothan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Marie Sidonio, his daughter Cheryl Anne Whalen, and his sister Moie Morris. Survivors include his children Robert F. Sidonio Sr., John Sidonio Jr., and Sioux Sidonio, all of Alabama, Sandee Robinson of Virginia, Lynne Fish and Angela Mia “Joan” Ying of Massachusetts, Anita Halsey and Marie-Elena “Malena” Carroll of Maryland, and Cheryl Ward. He is also survived by 28 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held on Jan. 12, at Sunset Funeral Home. Burial followed at Sunset Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to the Moose Lodge at mooseheart.org
