Joan Clayton, guidance counselor
Joan Izetta Clayton, 84, of Cary passed away Sunday, June 19, 2016 at Waltonwood Cary Parkway in Cary, NC.
She was born November 9, 1931 in Saratoga Springs, NY a daughter of Millard Edwin and Helen Herrington Servis. She married Robert Clayton on April 2, 1953. He preceded her in death.
Surviving are her brother, Gary (and wife, Mary) of Bemus Pt., NY; her children, Robert (and wife, Linda) Clayton of Corvallis, OR, Nancy Clayton (and husband, Eng Seng Loh) of Dunlap, IL, Susan (and husband, Robert) Schule of Cary, NC, and Daniel (and wife, Fernanda) Casey of Fairfield, CT; grandchildren, Laura and Catherine Schule, Alexandra and Emily Loh, and Sean and Kyle Casey; and other extended family.
Mrs. Clayton graduated from Hudson Falls, NY in 1949, Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY 1954 with a R.N and B.S. in Nursing, Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT with C.A.S. in School Psychology with National Certification, and attended Fort Wayne Art School.
She worked as an Operating Room Nurse at Glens Falls, New York Hospital, later working in the Ridgefield, Connecticut Public School System for 23 years as a Guidance Counselor and School Psychologist.
She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Women’s Fraternity, Capital Quilters Guild, Pine Tree Quilt Guild, Monday Quilter, and Basket Cases Quilt Bee. She was past Den Mother for Cub Scouts, Troop Leader for Girl Scouts, and previously involved in camping, bowling, and playing board games.
Her hobbies included music (piano, pipe organ, violin, and guitar), knitting, crocheting, embroidery, and quilting. She quilted over 50 years and made over 300 donated quilts.
Throughout all these accomplishments, she maintained a bright, cheerful and humorous presence. She was supportive, giving and genuinely cared about others. She had a special gift with children, who recognized her kindred spirit. Our childhood home was filled with her singing and piano playing. She was loving, helpful, and kind. She was a wonderful partner for Dad. She will be forever missed by all of us who will visit her in our hearts.
