Irene E. Jurdy, 87, caregiver, 20-year resident
Irene E. Jurdy of Ridgefield, a 20-year resident, died Monday, Sept. 23, at Glen Hill Health Center, Danbury, where she was recovering from a stroke. She was 87 years old.
Irene Elizabeth Semczuk was born October 28, 1925, in Danbury, the eldest daughter of the late Carl Semczuk and Elizabeth Chernek Semczuk. She was a 1944 graduate of Danbury High School and attended Grace New Haven School of Nursing, then a training site for the World War II U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps, until her marriage to the late George A. Jurdy, Sr. on Feb. 2, 1946.
Mrs. Jurdy had been a resident of Ridgefield for the past 20 years, where she continued working into her eighties as a companion caregiver. She was active in the Founders Hall, where she especially enjoyed classes in history, yoga and book discussions.
“Irene will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, wonderfully generous soul, and how she fully embraced life,” her family said. “Friends and family loved her deeply for her warmth and her ability to see the best in people and situations. She aided those in need unselfishly and tirelessly, at times without regard to her own safety and well-being, once driving miles out of her way through a snowstorm, giving a ride to a woman who she was certain was waiting for a bus in vain.”
Survivors include her children Donna Jurdy and her husband Michael Stefanick of Evanston, Ill.; Georgette Jurdy Rocheleau and her husband Bruce Rocheleau of DeKalb, Ill.; Teresa Jurdy and her husband Sam Hamblet of Jewett, N.Y.; and George Jurdy, Jr. of Portland, Ore.; grandchildren Jordy Rocheleau and his wife Miyo Kachi of Clarksville, Tenn.; Jade Jurdy of Portland; and Molly LaVelle of Portland; great-grandchild Kaden Rocheleau of Clarksville; sisters Leona Goldspinner of Ridgefield and Pauline Surovy of California; and brothers Emil Semczuk of Danbury and Peter Semczuk of Florida.
A Memorial and Celebration of Life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests favorite recollections be sent in her name to 721 W. Hillcrest Drive, DeKalb, IL 60115.
