Helen R. Pfeifer, 92, World War II veteran, longtime Ridgefielder
Helen Regina Pfeifer, 92, of Ridgefield, Connecticut, wife of the late Alfred E. Pfeifer, passed away on Saturday, July 28, 2012 with family by her side.
Helen was born in Danville, Ohio on June 25, 1920, Daughter of Jerome Edward Colopy and Mary Ann Butts. She was married to Alfred E. Pfeifer in 1944 at Camp Lejune, NC after Mr.Pfeifer enlisted in the Marines. They were married for 67 years.
Helen left school in the fourth grade to take care of her brothers and sisters. Helen worked as a switchboard operator and at the Alcove Restaurant in Mount Vernon. At the age of 22 years she served in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps where she earned an Honorable Discharge in 1943. Her family moved to Ridgefield, Conn. in 1966. Helen enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing, and riding her three wheel bike. She never met a stranger.
Helen is survived by a daughter Susan Charlene Scala and husband Robert of Stonington, Conn., son Eugene Edward Pfeifer of Stonington, Conn., sisters Dorothy Harrigal of Akron, Ohio and Della Ann Shira of Gambier, Ohio, and a brother Thomas Colopy and wife Peggy of Newark, Ohio. She is also survived by grandchildren Victoria Scala Schwartz and husband David Schwartz of Stonington, Conn., Robert Bacchus Scala and wife Christina Morse Scala of Mystic, Conn., Maevereen Emilia Pfeifer and Conor John Pfeifer of Weston, Conn., and great-grandchildren Brody Bacchus Scala and Rocco Romeo Scala.
Helen is preceded in death by husband Alfred Eugene Pfeifer and by Charlie Centrella, the second love of her life.
Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at 1:15 PM in the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah St., Ridgefield with Fr. Russell Augustine, Parochial Vicar of St. Mary Parish, Ridgefield officiating.
Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Ridgefield.
The family will receive friends in the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah St., Ridgefield on Wednesday after 11 AM.
