Gladys Sophie (Breckwoldt) Benn, 89, a long-time resident of Ridgefield, passed away on Monday, June 20th, 2016 at Danbury Hospital, surrounded by her family.
Gladys was born on December 7th, 1926, in Teaneck, New Jersey. She received her B.A. from Trenton State Teachers College, in education. During her college years, she met her beloved husband, Bob, her lifelong companion.
She taught first grade in Bergenfield, New Jersey for many years. Bob and Gladys moved to Ridgefield in 1955, where they lived together for 61 years. Gladys loved her family, sharing quality time in the beloved family home in Ridgefield, and at their second home at the Jersey Shore. Gladys was active in the First Congregational Church of Ridgefield, in women’s fellowship, couples club, and as a Sunday school teacher. She was a Girl Scout leader, and enjoyed the outdoors and gardening. Gladys was an exceptional mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, always teaching, and nurturing throughout her life. Her smile and laughter brought joy to all around her.
Gladys was a truly a strong person, fighting and winning her battle with lung cancer, and then a long, three year journey after a stroke. Gladys and mother are synonymous for her family and friends. Kind-hearted, generous, patient, humorous, and self-less to the very last days of her life.
