George C. Cartwright, Jr. died Saturday, January 10, 2015 at his home in Fairfield, CT surrounded by his family. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri on February 22, 1927 and raised in West Hartford, Connecticut. He was educated at The Mount Hermon School, William Hall High School, The University of Connecticut, Columbia University, and The University of Pittsburgh. He served his country as a Navy Corpsman in World War II and Korea.
He started his business career as a sales trainee for the Ford Motor Company at a dealership in Meriden, Connecticut. In 1950 he joined the Glens Falls Insurance Company and became a Special Agent, managing the company’s affairs in Tennessee and later was responsible for the Company’s affairs in southwestern Pennsylvania and West Virginia. In 1958 he was recalled to the Home Office in Glens Falls, NY to prepare the company for its first mainframe computer. He later became Vice President and manager of the Commercial Liability Underwriting Department and was also responsible for the company’s outgoing reinsurance program.
